About
Also known as: Ari Bernardus Lasso
Most Indonesian music fans know Ari Lasso as the voice that made Dewa 19 a household name in the early 1990s. The band's album Kangen won best album of the year in 1993, and Lasso's powerful vocals were a huge part of why it landed. He left the band in 2001 after a serious battle with drug addiction, a struggle he eventually overcame after promising his dying mother he would get clean. His solo career turned out to be just as compelling. Debut album Sendiri Dulu shifted over 500,000 copies, and follow up Keseimbangan sold more than 800,000, featuring collaborations with his former Dewa 19 bandmate Ahmad Dhani. He kept releasing records through the 2000s, including songs tied to the film Mengejar Matahari, and a duet with Bunga Citra Lestari. In 2021 he was diagnosed with lymphoma and had to undergo chemotherapy, announcing the end of his treatment in July 2022.
