About
Also known as: Oblivion, R.A.V.A.G.E., Raging Atheists Vowing a Gory End
Few death metal bands have bent the genre as far as Atheist did. The Sarasota, Florida outfit built their reputation on a fiercely technical playing style, and their 1991 album Unquestionable Presence is still held up as a cornerstone of technical death metal. The circumstances around that record were grim: bassist Roger Patterson died in a van accident just before recording began, and the band pushed through with Tony Choy stepping in on bass. After two disbandments and a long silence, they returned in 2006 and eventually put out Jupiter in 2010, their first studio album in over fifteen years, released through Season of Mist. Since then a follow up has remained elusive, though the band signed with Nuclear Blast Records in 2023, which reissued their back catalog, and they have been actively touring. Most recently they hit South America, Japan and New Zealand, and frontman Kelly Shaefer has confirmed that six songs are already written for a new record.
