About
Few Dutch bands have left a mark on extreme metal the way Pestilence have. Founded in Enschede in 1986, they started out as a thrash metal outfit before pivoting hard into death metal with their 1989 album Consuming Impulse, which earned them serious international attention. From there they kept pushing further, and by the time Testimony of the Ancients landed in 1991, they were blending technical death metal with progressive sensibilities in a way that put them alongside Death, Atheist, and Cynic as one of the genre's foundational acts. Their 1993 album Spheres went even further, weaving in jazz fusion elements and guitar synths, which was genuinely bold territory for a death metal band. Patrick Mameli has been the one constant through all of it, surviving multiple lineup changes, a breakup in 1994, and two subsequent reunions. The band came back in 2008 with Resurrection Macabre, then again in 2016, and have kept releasing new material since. Their catalogue now stretches to ten studio albums, including Hadeon in 2018 and Exitivm in 2021, each one a reminder that Pestilence never really settled into a comfort zone.
