About
Suffocation built the blueprint for what death metal could be. Their 1991 debut Effigy of the Forgotten came in under budget at five thousand dollars, took a week to record at Morrisound Studios in Tampa, and ended up shaping entire subgenres including technical death metal and slam death metal. The formula was distinctive: growled vocals, downtuned guitars, ferociously complex riffs and drumming, and well placed breakdowns that hit like a wall. Formed in Long Island in 1989, the band went through lineup shifts but kept pushing forward across eight studio albums. Their 2009 release Blood Oath charted at number 135 on the Billboard 200, a notable feat for music this extreme. They were also featured in a History Channel promo, which says something about how far outside the underground they had reached. Their most recent full album, Hymns From The Apocrypha, dropped in 2023, proving the New York veterans are still very much at it.
