Few Dutch metal bands have had as turbulent a ride as Asphyx. Founded in Oldenzaal in 1987, this death and doom metal outfit spent years cycling through breakups, reformations and lineup changes before finding any real stability. Their 1991 debut The Rack, featuring the distinctive throat of Martin van Drunen, set a brutally slow and crushing tone that became their signature. Van Drunen left shortly after, the band dissolved multiple times, and they even briefly operated under the name Soulburn in the late 1990s before returning as Asphyx for the 2000 album On the Wings of Inferno. The 2007 reunion brought van Drunen back into the fold alongside drummer Bob Bagchus and guitarist Paul Baayens, and this time things stuck. Death...The Brutal Way in 2009 became a genuine comeback moment, selling out quickly in North America through Ibex Moon Records. The momentum carried through Deathhammer in 2012, Incoming Death in 2016, and most recently Necroceros in 2021, cementing Asphyx as one of the most enduring names in European death metal.
