Avril Lavigne burst onto the scene with her 2002 debut Let Go, a record that sold over 15 million copies worldwide and put her squarely at the centre of early 2000s pop punk and rock. Singles like Complicated and Sk8er Boi defined a generation, and her follow up Under My Skin pushed further into harder rock territory, debuting at number one in thirteen countries. Her third album The Best Damn Thing kept the momentum going with the massive hit Girlfriend, while she also picked up acting work and modelling alongside her music career. After a long battle with Lyme disease that slowed her output considerably, Lavigne came back with Head Above Water, a deeply personal single she wrote during her illness that arrived in 2018. The song describes feeling close to death, and it marked a real shift in emotional weight compared to her earlier work. She has kept releasing music since, with Bite Me arriving in 2021, showing she has no intention of stepping back from the spotlight.
