About
Ayanna Witter Johnson does something most musicians never attempt: she sings and plays the cello at the same time, weaving together soul, hip hop and reggae with a classical training that earned her a first class degree in Composition and a master's from the Manhattan School of Music. That blend of worlds is genuinely rare, and it shows up in collaborations ranging from touring with Peter Gabriel and Anoushka Shankar to recording with Akala and writing for the London Symphony Orchestra. Her breakthrough moment came in 2010 when she became the first non American to win first place at Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater, a competition whose alumni include Ella Fitzgerald and Jimi Hendrix. Since then she has released a string of EPs and albums, with Road Runner arriving in 2019 and Ocean Floor following in 2023. The Rise Up video with Akala gives a good feel for where her instincts sit: rooted in something classic, but always pushing outward.
