Bai Kamara Jr. comes from Sierra Leone and Belgium, and that dual heritage runs straight through his music. His blues draws on African rhythms and light hypnotic guitar grooves, but it doesn't stop there: soul, jazz, funk, rock and pop all find their way in, blended into something that feels entirely his own. His voice draws comparisons to Robert Cray, warm and soulful yet understated and intimate, and he delivers it all with a certain gentlemanly charm. As a songwriter he is equally sharp. His album Traveling Medicine Man earned strong reviews, continuing a run of critical attention that included a previous album charting in the British blues charts. He is the kind of artist who sounds familiar and surprising at the same time, rooted in a tradition but never quite where you expect him to be.
