Barclay James Harvest built their reputation on a sound that blended orchestral arrangements with progressive rock, and their early albums featured a full live orchestra before they found their footing commercially. Founded in Oldham in 1966, the band came into their own after moving to Polydor in the early 1970s, when sales finally caught up with the ambition. Their 1977 track "Poor Man's Moody Blues" was a direct response to critics who used the phrase as a put down, essentially turning the insult into a hook. They also made history as the first Western rock band to play an open air concert in East Germany, drawing over 170,000 people to Treptower Park in 1987. After a split in 1998, the band effectively became two separate acts, both carrying the Barclay James Harvest name. John Lees leads one side, while Les Holroyd fronts the other. Despite lineup changes and personal losses over the years, both versions have kept a loyal following, especially in Germany, France, and Switzerland, where the band's symphonic, melody driven style never went out of fashion.
