Out of Soweto comes BCUC, short for Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness, a group that blends ancient South African chants and township styles like mbaqanga, maskandi and marabi with afrobeat, funk, punk, hip hop and soul. They sing across all eleven official languages of South Africa, and their songs shift shape constantly, moving from hymn like melodies and cool soulful vocals into furious political raps and pounding bass guitar riffs. The band describes their own sound as "indigenous funky soul" and "afro psychedelic" music, citing Fela Kuti and James Brown as touchstones. Their 2018 album Emakhosini was named best world music album of the year by The Guardian, and the group has taken that energy to stages at Glastonbury, WOMAD and the Newport Folk Festival among many others. Their music digs into the hard realities of post apartheid South Africa, tackling social injustice, Black identity and African consciousness. They have collaborated with Femi Kuti and Saul Williams, and in 2023 they picked up the WOMEX Artist Award.
