Bombino, the Tuareg guitarist from Agadez, Niger, has spent his career turning the struggles of his people into something you can feel through an electric guitar. He sings in Tamasheq and his music carries the weight of Tuareg geopolitical life, having lived through two rebellions, forced exile in Burkina Faso, and a government ban on guitars that his community saw as a symbol of resistance. None of that stopped him. His 2013 album Nomad, produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, hit number one on both the iTunes World Chart and the Billboard World Chart, earning him a reputation as a virtuoso. His 2018 album Deran, recorded in Casablanca at a studio owned by the king of Morocco, landed him a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album, making him the first Nigerien artist ever nominated. The New York Times called him the Sultan of Shred. His 2023 album Sahel, on Partisan Records, shows he is still very much in his stride.
