Rooted in the Tuareg heartland around Kidal in northern Mali, Tamikrest built their sound around a cause: giving a louder voice to the Kel Tamasheq people. Formed in 2006 and shaped by the influence of Tinariwen alongside a self taught diet of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, and Mark Knopfler, they landed on something hypnotic and hard to pin down, where trance like melody meets the crunch of rock. Their first two albums, Adagh and Toumastin, showcased tight songwriting, while Chatma shifted things up with a heavier sound and a sharp focus on the struggles of women in the Sahara, earning the Songlines Award for Best Album in 2013. Since then, Kidal and Tamotaït have kept pushing deeper into Tamasheq tradition without losing any of that electric energy. They have toured relentlessly across Europe, Africa, the Americas, Japan, South Korea, and Australia, and their live shows are widely considered where their music really comes alive.
