About
Also known as: Fatou Mata Diawara
Fatoumata Diawara blends the traditional Wassoulou music of southern Mali with jazz, blues and international influences, all anchored by what critics have called her sensuous voice. She sings mostly in Bambara and has built a reputation for songs that tackle serious ground: female circumcision, forced emigration, the struggles of African women, and the fundamentalist occupation of northern Mali. That last subject led directly to her involvement in Abderrahmane Sissako's film Timbuktu, which picked up seven César nominations and an Academy Award nod. She has worked alongside Oumou Sangaré, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Roberto Fonseca and Damon Albarn, and appeared on the Gorillaz single Désolé from their Song Machine album. Her 2022 record Maliba was created as a soundtrack for a Google Arts and Culture project to digitise ancient manuscripts in Timbuktu, and The Economist called it a wondrous work of cultural preservation. Grammy nominations followed her album Fenfo and her feature on Disclosure's Ultimatum.
