Angélique Kidjo sings in five languages, sometimes inventing her own words when none of them will do, and that restless creative spirit runs through everything she makes. The Beninese artist blends West African tradition, including Benin's Zilin vocal technique, with jazz, rock, and whatever else she feels like pulling into her orbit. Her debut international album Parakou got things moving, but Logozo hit number one on the Billboard World Albums chart and put her on stages worldwide. From there she spent years on an ambitious trilogy exploring how African music shaped the sounds of the Americas, recording in Salvador de Bahia for the Afro Brazilian Black Ivory Soul and pulling in Latin and Caribbean flavors for Oyaya. She has recorded with Branford Marsalis, Carlos Santana, Dave Matthews, and Cassandra Wilson among many others, and her 2018 full album cover of Talking Heads' Remain in Light showed she has never stopped surprising people. Five Grammy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the first for a person of African ethnicity, round out a career that keeps defying easy categories.
