Few artists have reshaped a national sound the way Youssou N'Dour reshaped Senegal's. He was one of the key architects of mbalax, a genre that fuses traditional Senegambian rhythms rooted in Serer sacred music with Cuban rumba, jazz, soul and hip hop, and the New York Times once described his voice as an "arresting tenor, a supple weapon deployed with prophetic authority". Rolling Stone ranked him among the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time in 2023, and Folk Roots magazine called him the African Artist of the Century. His 1994 duet with Neneh Cherry, "7 Seconds", became his biggest international hit, and his Grammy win for the album Egypt in 2005 cemented his global reputation. He has recorded and toured with Peter Gabriel, Sting, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Wyclef Jean and many others. Beyond music, he owns Groupe Futurs Médias, runs his own record label Jololi, served as Senegal's Minister of Tourism, and earned an honorary doctorate from Yale. His album Eclairer le monde, Light the World earned him a Grammy nomination in the Best Global Music Album category.
