About
Shostakovich wrote his First Cello Concerto for the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich, a close friend with whom he shared a fondness for vodka as much as music. The work is considered one of the greatest cello concertos of the twentieth century, and its long cadenza is among the most emotionally devastating passages in the repertoire. What it demands is depth rather than sheer virtuosity. Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk is regarded as one of the few soloists who taps into the same raw, primal sound that Rostropovich brought to the piece, making him a natural fit for this music. The programme pairs the concerto with Beethoven's Eighth Symphony, his shortest symphony and, by his own reckoning, his best. Where his other late works look forward, the Eighth glances back toward Mozart, and its second movement plays with jokes about the metronome, a brand new invention at the time of the 1812 premiere. The Nederlands Kamerorkest performs the symphony without a conductor, following the lead of the concertmaster instead.
