About

Also known as: NNO, North Netherlands Orchestra, Northern Netherlands Symphonie Orchestra

Based in Groningen, the Noord Nederlands Orkest (NNO) is one of the oldest professional symphony orchestras in the Netherlands, with roots stretching back to 1862. It came together in its current form in 1989 when the Noordelijk Filharmonisch Orkest and the Frysk Orkest merged, making their home at De Oosterpoort in Groningen. The NNO plays around 120 concerts a season, ranging from concert halls and outdoor stages to festivals and schools across the three northern provinces. Their programming spans baroque to contemporary classical, but they also embrace crossover projects, from film and game music to collaborations with artists like De Kast, Ruben Block, and Stef Bos. They have performed at major venues including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. Since the 2022/2023 season, Norwegian conductor Eivind Gullberg Jensen has led the orchestra as chief conductor.
