Few bands captured early 80s America quite like the Go Go's, and Belinda Carlisle was the voice at the center of it all. As the lead vocalist of the group she co founded, she fronted the first all female band to hit number one with an album of their own songs played on their own instruments, Beauty and the Beat. When the Go Go's split in 1985, Carlisle barely skipped a beat as a solo artist. Heaven Is a Place on Earth went to number one worldwide, Circle in the Sand hit number five, and I Get Weak reached number two, with actress Diane Keaton directing the videos for both of those singles. Later albums kept the hits coming, with Leave a Light On and Summer Rain extending her run well into the late 80s and early 90s. She and the Go Go's were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
