About
Also known as: Betty LaVette, Betty Lavett, Bettye LeVette
Bettye LaVette made her first record at sixteen and spent decades as one of soul music's best kept secrets before the world finally caught up with her. Her 2005 album I've Got My Own Hell to Raise, produced by Joe Henry and built entirely from songs written by women including Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, and Dolly Parton, landed on best of lists everywhere and kicked off a remarkable late career run. The Scene of the Crime followed in 2007, recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals with the Drive By Truckers, debuted at number one on Billboard's Top Blues Albums chart, and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Her style pulls from soul, blues, rock, funk, gospel, and country in a way that feels lived in rather than eclectic for its own sake. In 2020 she was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, and in 2023 she received the Legacy of Americana Lifetime Achievement Award.
