Big Thief built their reputation on a kind of raw emotional intensity that is hard to fake. The Brooklyn four piece, centered on vocalist and guitarist Adrianne Lenker alongside guitarist Buck Meek and drummer James Krivchenia, started turning heads with their 2016 debut Masterpiece and then cemented their status with Capacity the following year, landing at the top of NPR's album of the year lists both times. Their 2019 double release, the ethereal U.F.O.F. and the grittier Two Hands, earned Grammy nominations and near perfect scores from critics, with Pitchfork calling U.F.O.F. a 9.2 and Best New Music. The ambition kept growing. Their 2022 double album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You hit the Dutch top ten and pulled in yet another Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. In 2025 the band released Double Infinity as a trio, after founding bassist Max Oleartchik departed in 2024. The record brought in several session musicians and showed that Big Thief's restless, genre blurring sound, sitting somewhere between indie rock, folk and lo fi, is still very much alive.
