About
Bikini Kill pretty much invented riot grrrl as we know it. Formed in Olympia, Washington in 1990, the band built its reputation on abrasive punk rock, fiercely feminist lyrics, and live shows where Kathleen Hanna would personally drag male hecklers out of the crowd while encouraging women to move to the front. Their EP, produced by Ian MacKaye of Fugazi, put them on the map, and a collaboration with Joan Jett helped shape their sound even further. Debut album Pussy Whipped and the final record Reject All American cemented their place as one of the defining acts of 1990s underground music. After breaking up in 1997, the band reunited properly in 2019 with Hanna, Kathi Wilcox, and Tobi Vail at the core, plus touring guitarist Erica Dawn Lyle stepping in for original member Billy Karren. The reunion wasn't a nostalgia exercise so much as proof the band's confrontational energy hadn't dimmed one bit.
