Few groups have a origin story quite as tangled as Black Box. The Italian trio of Daniele Davoli, Valerio Semplici, and Mirko Limoni built one of the defining house tracks of the late 1980s with "Ride on Time", which topped the charts in three countries and sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide, making it the best selling single in the UK for the entire year of 1989. The catch: the vocals everyone was hearing belonged to Loleatta Holloway, sampled without permission, while French model Katrin Quinol fronted the act in videos and on TV, lip syncing the whole time. The resulting lawsuits and scandal reshaped how the music industry handled sampling credits. Once the dust settled, Black Box kept going. Their debut album Dreamland went gold in the UK and US and hit number one in Australia, with Martha Wash having actually sung most of it without a credit to her name. Tracks like "Everybody Everybody" and "Strike It Up" racked up multiple number ones on the Billboard Dance chart. A second album followed in 1995, and the group has continued performing live with vocalist Celestine Walcott Gordon, who stepped in around 2015 and appeared on their 2018 single "Everyone Will Follow".
