About
Black Widow were among the first rock bands to lean hard into Satanic and occult imagery, both on record and on stage. The Leicester group started out in 1966 as Pesky Gee!, put out one album under that name, then reinvented themselves as Black Widow and released Sacrifice in 1970. It reached No. 32 on the UK Albums Chart, and they played the Isle of Wight Festival that same year. Their best known song, Come to the Sabbat, has been covered by plenty of acts, with a version by Timberjack even hitting the Top 10 in New Zealand. By 1971 they tried to shed the dark image to win over a wider audience, but it didn't work, and CBS dropped them after a couple more albums. A fourth record, recorded in 1972, only came out in 1997. Decades later, Clive Jones and Geoff Griffith revived the name, adding Wicked Minds keyboardist Paolo Negri and making the 1980s new wave flavoured Sleeping With Demons, with Tony Martin guesting on Hail Satan.
