About
Also known as: Vlad
Blood from the North, which is what the German name roughly translates to, is an apt title for this French black metal outfit from Mondeville that has spent decades pushing the genre far beyond its origins. Driven by Vindsval, who has helmed the project since its early days under the name Vlad, Blut aus Nord built a reputation on records that weaponise dissonance, industrial noise and a genuinely unsettling atmosphere. The pivotal moment came with 2003's The Work Which Transforms God, a largely instrumental concept album designed to unsettle the listener's assumptions about reality, which Terrorizer Magazine placed in its top 10 albums of that year. From there the band kept twisting. MoRT pushed further into experimental and dark ambient territory, while Hallucinogen, released in 2019, landed on Loudwire's list of the 50 best metal albums of that year. Vindsval has always resisted easy categorisation, distancing the project from both Satanism and nationalism, two staples of the genre, while running the underground French label Appease Me alongside all of it. Their output has been relentless, stretching across full lengths, EPs and split releases, with the Disharmonium series keeping things very much alive into the 2020s.
