About
Boi Akih is an Amsterdam duo that stitches together Moluccan song traditions, Balinese gamelan, Dutch jazz, improvised music, Indian classical sounds and traditional African music. Monica Akihary sings, Niels Brouwer plays guitar and writes the music, and the two share lyric duties. Akihary sings in her father's native language, Haruku, which is considered moribund, and since 1998 the pair have worked with Dutch and Australian linguists who study it. They keep a wide circle of collaborators, from cellist Ernst Reijseger and saxophonist Sean Bergin to tabla player Sandip Bhattacharya and gamelan musician Made Subandi, who joined them on Philosophy of Love in 2010. The discography runs from the self titled 1997 debut through Uwa i and Yalelol on Enja to Liquid Songs, Storyteller and 2023's From and to Infinity. They have played the Berlin Jazz Festival, Kaunas Jazz Festival and Bimhuis, and turned up on VPRO, BBC and Radio France.
