About
Also known as: The Canals
Bombay Bicycle Club have always been hard to pin down, which is exactly what makes them interesting. The Crouch End quartet of Jack Steadman, Jamie MacColl, Suren de Saram, and Ed Nash built their reputation on restless genre hopping, moving between folk, electronica, world music, and indie rock across six albums. Their trajectory took them from winning a Channel 4 competition to land the opening slot at the 2006 V Festival, all the way to topping the UK album charts in February 2014 with So Long, See You Tomorrow. In 2016 the band put things on pause so members could chase solo projects, with Steadman releasing music as Mr Jukes and Nash recording under the name Toothless. They announced their return in January 2019, describing getting back in a room together as a reminder of what a good thing they had going. Few bands can pull off acoustic intimacy and full blown electronic production with equal conviction, and that range is what keeps their catalogue genuinely rewarding to dig into.
