Few acts defined the disco era quite like Boney M., the West German based group assembled by producer Frank Farian in the mid 1970s. Farian built the group around four Caribbean performers, Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett from Jamaica, Maizie Williams from Montserrat, and Bobby Farrell from Aruba, and crafted a sound that blended disco beats with reggae, funk and soul. The formula clicked in a big way: the group sold over 100 million records during their commercial peak and notched up hits including "Daddy Cool", "Rasputin", "Ma Baker" and "Rivers of Babylon". Their run in the late 1970s was genuinely remarkable. "Rivers of Babylon" became one of the biggest selling singles of all time in the UK, and "Mary's Boy Child / Oh My Lord" landed the 1978 Christmas number one there too. They scored eight number ones in Germany alone. One of the more striking footnotes to their story is a promotional visit to the Soviet Union, making them one of the very few Western acts to perform there at the time.
