About
Also known as: Boris Grebenshchikov, Boris Grebenshikov, Б. Г., Б.Гребенщиков, БГ, Борис Борисович Гребенщиков
Few figures in Russian rock carry the weight that Boris Grebenshchikov does. Known simply as BG, he co founded the band Aquarium in 1972 and spent decades navigating Soviet censorship, underground apartment concerts, and bootleg cassette networks to get his music heard. The band's 1980 performance at the Tbilisi Rock Festival caused a near riot and got Grebenshchikov fired from his day job by KGB report, which tells you everything about how seriously people took what he was doing. His range is genuinely hard to pin down. A 1989 English language album produced by Dave Stewart featured Annie Lennox, Chrissie Hynde and Billy MacKenzie, and scored a top ten hit on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. Later work pulled in Armenian, Indian and African influences, and his 2014 album Salt was called one of the best of his long career. Since 2005 he has also hosted a weekly radio show on Radio Rossii called Aerostat, championing music that would otherwise go unheard.
