About
Boy Harsher built their reputation on a sound that sits somewhere between a dimly lit dancefloor and a horror film score: coldwave and EBM textures, minimal drum machine loops, oscillating synths, and vocalist Jae Matthews delivering what one critic described as "haunting incantations" about desire, fantasy, and loneliness. The duo, made up of Matthews and producer Augustus Muller, has been described as able to turn any quiet room into a seedy nightclub, and their track "Pain" has become a genuine underground anthem. Beyond records, they have pushed into filmmaking with their directorial debut The Runner, a short film that starred Kristina Esfandiari and screened on Shudder, complete with an original soundtrack. They even collaborated with Eurorack designer Ross Fish of Moffenzeef Modular to build a limited edition drone synthesizer tied to the project. Muller cites Sleep Chamber, Suicide, DAF and Yello as early touchstones, while Matthews draws inspiration from Nico, Chelsea Wolfe and Zola Jesus. They run their own label, Nude Club, which handles Boy Harsher and related artists.
