About
Tijn Wybenga wears several hats at once: composer, conductor and bandleader of Brainteaser Orchestra, a collective he assembled in 2019 from musicians who were each on the verge of breaking through in the Dutch jazz scene. The roster includes guitarists Teis Semey, saxophonist Kika Sprangers and drummer Jamie Peet, alongside strings, brass and vibraphone. Their debut album Brainteaser won the Deutscher Jazz Preis 2022, with NRC describing the sound as fresh, lively future jazz. Wybenga's compositional process is distinctive: he records solo improvisations from each musician, then samples, rearranges and processes those fragments into new layered pieces where every individual voice stays audible within the larger whole. It sits somewhere between jazz composition, free improvisation and electronic thinking. For their second album the orchestra collaborated with French violinist Theo Ceccaldi and hip hop vocalist Pink Oculus, and a performance with guitarist Pat Metheny is on the cards too.
