About
Also known as: Ali Douglas Newman, Ali Newman, Jason Douglas Newman
Brother Ali has built one of the most distinctive voices in underground hip hop over a career spanning more than two decades with Rhymesayers Entertainment. His albums The Undisputed Truth, Us, and Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color all landed on the US Billboard charts and drew serious critical attention, mixing sharp political commentary with deeply personal storytelling. His music takes on racial inequality, US government policy, and themes of hope and resilience, and his 2007 video for "Uncle Sam Goddamn" drew enough heat that the Department of Homeland Security froze a money transfer to his label. More recently, Ali has been vocal about Palestinian liberation, and his outspokenness around the events of October 2023 had real professional consequences. He says a major distribution deal for his 2024 album Love & Service was abruptly canceled, and he describes going an entire year without a single paid show, something he calls unprecedented in his career. Through all of it, his commitment to using music as a platform for social justice has never wavered.
