About

Also known as: Bruce Randall Hornsby, Hornsby, Bruce

Bruce Hornsby won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1987 on the back of "The Way It Is", a piano ballad about homelessness and civil rights that hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It has since been sampled by at least six rap artists, Tupac Shakur among them. With his band The Range, he leaned on bright, syncopated piano solos and a sound some called the "Virginia sound", a blend of rock, jazz and bluegrass. After the hits, he went somewhere much more interesting than the charts. Hornsby played piano on Don Henley's "The End of the Innocence" and Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me", and toured with the Grateful Dead for well over 100 shows between 1990 and 1992. He later won Grammys for bluegrass and for a pop instrumental, and his music keeps pulling from folk, jazz, modern classical and jam band territory, whether with the Noisemakers or alongside Ricky Skaggs.
