About
Buraka Som Sistema built their reputation by doing something genuinely unusual: fusing kuduro, the raw Angolan dance music genre, with techno beats in a way that hadn't really been done before. The Amadora, Portugal based group is widely credited with pioneering what became known as "zouk bass" and "progressive kuduro", and their 2007 track "Sound of Kuduro" brought them international attention, thanks in part to a guest verse from M.I.A. Their album Black Diamond followed on Sony BMG in 2008, and their single "Kalemba (Wegue Wegue)" reached well beyond the club circuit after it landed in FIFA 10. The group kept their music in the cultural conversation through placements in other EA Sports titles and a 2014 Adidas campaign featuring Dani Alves. They won Best Portuguese Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008, a solid marker of how far their sound had travelled. After announcing a hiatus and playing what was billed as a farewell show in Lisbon in 2016, they eventually came back together and returned to the stage at NOS Alive in 2026.
