About
Few reggae artists have stayed as true to their roots as Winston Rodney, the Jamaican singer and musician who has recorded and performed under the name Burning Spear since the late 1960s. A devoted Rastafarian, Rodney built his reputation on deeply spiritual, Marcus Garvey influenced roots reggae, and the 1975 album Marcus Garvey was the record that put him on the map internationally. Island Records picked it up for wider release, though Rodney found their remixes frustrating enough that he eventually set up his own Burning Music label to keep control of his sound. Over the decades his live show became something of a legend, weaving in touches of free jazz, funk and psychedelic music while staying anchored in reggae. The Grammy wins for Calling Rastafari in 2000 and Jah Is Real in 2009 confirmed what fans had known for years. Since the early 2000s he and his wife Sonia have run Burning Music Records together, releasing close to 40 albums, singles and DVDs on their own terms.
