About
Few reggae records carry the mythic weight of Two Sevens Clash. Culture's 1977 debut predicted the apocalypse on 7 July 1977 with such conviction that many people in Kingston literally stayed indoors that day. The trio of Joseph Hill, Albert Walker, and Roy Dayes had formed just a year earlier, cutting their teeth with producer Joe Gibbs before crossing over to the UK punk and reggae crowds alike, helped along by John Peel spinning their records on BBC Radio 1. Hill remained the soul of the group through lineup changes and a long royalty dispute with Gibbs, recording steadily through the 1980s and 1990s with collaborators like Sly and Robbie for labels including Shanachie and Ras Records. After Hill died on tour in 2006, his son Kenyatta stepped up as lead singer, with Walker and Telford Nelson on backing vocals. The 2011 release Live On saw Kenyatta revisiting his father's catalogue, keeping that roots reggae fire going.
