Few Dutch acts have left a mark quite like BZN, the Volendam group that racked up 55 Top 40 hits and holds the record as the only act to land a Top 40 single for 26 consecutive years, from 1973 to 1998. Their signature sound, a smooth middle of the road pop style with male and female vocals singing in English, French, and eventually Dutch, became known in the Netherlands as palingsound. The breakthrough came with "Mon Amour" in 1976, which hit number one and sold 130,000 copies, kicking off a run of hits that barely let up for two decades. Over their career BZN sold around 15 million records worldwide and collected 88 gold and platinum certifications. They found fans well beyond the Netherlands too, earning platinum albums in South Africa and picking up a following in Flanders, Romania, and parts of Germany. They also played a direct role in launching the career of singer Jan Smit, whom they discovered at age 10. After a farewell tour in 2006 and 2007, the band called it a day, leaving behind one of the most remarkable commercial runs in Dutch pop history.
