If you've ever felt that prog rock's golden era had one band that never quite got its due, Camel are probably that band. Formed in Guildford in 1971 and anchored by guitarist Andrew Latimer, they built a devoted cult following through a run of records that balanced intricate musicianship with genuine melody. The 1975 instrumental concept album The Snow Goose, inspired by a Paul Gallico short story, was their real breakthrough, landing them a prestigious show at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Symphony Orchestra. Over the course of fourteen studio albums they shifted from lush symphonic prog to jazzier, more commercial territory before going quiet for much of the 1980s. Latimer revived the name in 1991 and has kept it independent ever since, releasing records on his own Camel Productions label. Their influence quietly spread to artists like Marillion, Opeth and Steven Wilson, and music journalist Mark Blake summed it up neatly, calling them "the great unsung heroes of 70s prog rock".
