About
Camera Obscura have been making quietly devastating indie pop out of Glasgow since 1996, built around Tracyanne Campbell's songwriting and a sound that draws comparisons to fellow Scots Belle and Sebastian. Their music gets described as twee pop, but there's real emotional weight underneath it, with a knack for what fans call an "honest, wide, and adult approach to heartbreak, romantic liaisons, and escapism". Highlights along the way include the 2006 fan favourite "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" and the 2009 album My Maudlin Career, their first UK Top 40 record. The band went on hiatus after the death of keyboardist Carey Lander in 2015, a loss that hit the group hard. They eventually regrouped, bringing in Donna Maciocia on keyboards and backing vocals as a permanent member, and in 2024 released Look to the East, Look to the West, their sixth studio album and their first in eleven years. It was worth the wait.
