About
Camerata RCO brings together musicians from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to perform chamber music in smaller, more intimate settings. Rooted in the Netherlands, the ensemble draws on the exceptional depth of one of the world's great orchestras while focusing on the kind of close musical conversation that only a small group can produce. A typical programme might pair Beethoven's Septet in E flat major, Op. 20, a six movement work for clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola, cello and double bass, with music by his contemporaries. The Septet has the relaxed, sociable character of a serenade, and the shifting blend of string and wind colours gives each instrument room to speak. Camerata RCO also explores the broader Viennese classical world, including composers like Johann Nepomuk Hummel, a pupil of Mozart who wrote warmly crafted works for small mixed ensembles.
