About
Also known as: Doric Quartet
The Doric String Quartet has been one of the UK's most consistently adventurous chamber ensembles since forming in 1998, with a repertoire that stretches from Haydn and Beethoven all the way through to living composers like Thomas Adès and Brett Dean. Brett Dean actually wrote his String Quartet No. 3, Hidden Agendas, specifically for them, and they have premiered works by Peter Maxwell Davies and Donnacha Dennehy at the Wigmore Hall. Their 2022 Aldeburgh Festival performance of the complete Bartók quartets, all in a single day, drew the kind of critical response that sticks around. Reviewers tend to reach for words like precision and clarity when describing the Doric's sound, with critics at the Washington Post, Gramophone and The Strad all noting their clean articulation, sparing but beautiful vibrato, and an ensemble tightness that never tips into sterility. They record for Chandos, hold a teaching residency at the Royal Academy of Music, and served as artistic directors of the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival. The current lineup features Maia Cabeza and Ying Xue on violin, Emma Wernig on viola and founding cellist John Myerscough.
