Capital Cities started out writing jingles together, and that background in commercial music clearly stuck. The Los Angeles duo, Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian, built a sound that mixes synth pop hooks with indie rock energy, and their breakthrough single 'Safe and Sound' became an undeniable earworm, hitting number one on both the US Alternative Songs chart and the German Singles Chart, while popping up everywhere from HBO campaigns to a Mazda commercial to an Air New Zealand safety video. Their debut album, In a Tidal Wave of Mystery, came out on Capitol Records in 2013 and featured guest spots from André 3000, among others. The 'Safe and Sound' video, shot at the historic Los Angeles Theater and choreographed by Emmy nominated Mandy Moore, won the MTV VMA for Best Visual Effects. The duo later toured with Katy Perry on her Prismatic World Tour and released their second album, Solarize, in 2018.
