About
Carl Craig is one of the key architects of Detroit techno's second wave, a producer whose reach stretches well beyond the dancefloor. Operating under a string of aliases including Psyche, BFC, Paperclip People, and Innerzone Orchestra, he founded Planet E Communications in 1991, a label that became a home for fellow Detroit talents like Moodymann and Kevin Saunderson. His studio albums, from Landcruising in 1995 through to More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art, draw on soul, jazz, new wave, and krautrock, making his catalogue far harder to pin down than a simple techno tag would suggest. His collaborative work is just as varied: a 2008 album with Moritz von Oswald on Deutsche Grammophon, a 2015 record with Green Velvet, and remixes for everyone from Depeche Mode to Tori Amos. In 2020 he moved into installation art with Party/After Party, an immersive sound and light piece that became part of the permanent collection at Dia:Beacon, guiding visitors through a full night out from the DJ's perspective. A 2024 documentary, Desire, the Carl Craig Story, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and charts the full arc of his career.
