About
Also known as: Juan Owen Atkins, Magic Juan
If techno has a founding father, most people would point to Juan Atkins. The Detroit DJ and producer essentially built the genre from scratch, fusing the cosmic funk of Parliament with Kraftwerk's cold machine precision and a futurist vision borrowed from sociologist Alvin Toffler. His 1982 track "Clear", recorded with Rick Davis as Cybotron, is widely cited as the clearest starting point for the whole techno sound. Mixmag called him "the original pioneer of Detroit techno" and AllMusic went further, dubbing him the "godfather of techno." Atkins founded the Metroplex label in 1985 and has released music ever since under aliases including Model 500 and Infiniti. He was part of the legendary Belleville Three alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. Later work pushed into dub techno territory through his Borderland project with Moritz von Oswald, producing two albums together. His Model 500 alias has stayed active across decades, with Digital Solutions arriving in 2015 and a collaboration with Orlando Voorn under the name Frequency vs Atkins following in 2017.
