With over 20 million records sold worldwide, Carlos Vives is the Colombian artist who brought vallenato out of its regional corner and onto the global stage. Born in Santa Marta, he built his sound by fusing traditional Colombian rhythms like vallenato, cumbia, champeta and porro with rock, pop and reggaeton, a move that scandalized purists but won over pretty much everyone else. His 1993 album Clásicos de la Provincia, recorded with his band La Provincia, was the record that changed everything, taking home the Billboard Latin Music Award for Best Album and introducing vallenato to the wider world. His career is packed with milestones: two Grammy Awards, eighteen Latin Grammy Awards, and an induction into the Billboard Latin Music Hall of Fame. He has collaborated with Shakira, Juan Luis Guerra, Daddy Yankee, Alejandro Sanz and many others. La Bicicleta, his 2016 duet with Shakira, shot straight to number one on Billboard's US Latin Airplay chart. Beyond music, Vives is also a well known actor in Colombia, especially for his lead roles in the telenovelas Gallito Ramírez and Escalona.
