Few songs have kept pop culture guessing quite like "You're So Vain", and it belongs to Carly Simon, the singer and songwriter who turned confessional pop into an art form in the early 1970s. Her 1972 album No Secrets sat at the top of the Billboard 200 for five weeks, and the title track hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 for three weeks, earning her three Grammy nominations including Record of the Year. She followed that run with the Bond theme "Nobody Does It Better" in 1977, which became the No. 1 Adult Contemporary hit of that year and is still considered one of the best in the franchise. Simon's range as a writer kept her relevant across decades. "Let the River Run", written for the 1988 film Working Girl, made her the first solo artist to win a Grammy, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe for a song she composed, wrote, and performed entirely on her own. With a contralto voice and a catalog stretching from soft rock to jazz to blues rock, she racked up 24 Billboard Hot 100 hits across her career. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
