About
Also known as: CASIOPEA 3rd, CASIOPEA-P4, カシオペア
Few Japanese bands have left a mark on jazz fusion quite like Casiopea, a Tokyo outfit that has been reshaping the genre since 1976. Built around guitarist Issei Noro and bassist Tetsuo Sakurai, the group hit their stride in the early 1980s with a run of records that blended tight, technically sharp playing with distinctly Japanese melodic sensibilities. Their 1982 live album Mint Jams is widely regarded as a landmark in Japan's jazz fusion history, and their signature tracks Take Me and Asayake remain touchstones of the genre. The band has gone through enough lineup changes to fill a chapter of their own, cycling through several eras under different names including Casiopea 3rd and now Casiopea P4. Drummer Akira Jimbo came and went more than once, and after his second departure in 2022, Yoshinori Imai stepped in and the group entered its current fourth period. Guitarist Noro has been the one constant throughout, keeping the sound rooted in that infectious mix of jazz, funk and rock the band built their reputation on.
