Eight cellos, one city, and a repertoire that keeps growing. Cello Octet Amsterdam started out in 1989 under the name Conjunto Ibérico, founded by Elias Arizcuren in Amsterdam, and has since built itself into something genuinely rare: the only permanent ensemble of this exact configuration in the world. Because original music for eight cellos is scarce, they have actively drawn composers toward the format, with Terry Riley, Mauricio Kagel, Arvo Pärt, Theo Loevendie, Franco Donatoni, and Luciano Berio all writing works for them. Their catalogue now stretches past 100 pieces. These days the group performs without a conductor, which suits the intimacy and directness of the cello sound. They have toured widely across Europe and the Americas, including a stop at the Wigmore Hall in London, and have recorded around 20 albums. Recent work has included Philip Glass material, such as the suite from Dracula, sitting alongside pieces by Kate Moore and Arvo Pärt.
