Chanpan

About

Chanpan started out busking on the streets of Chinatown in New York, playing for spare change to fund their first recordings. The trio is made up of singer Grace Dumdaw and twin brothers Lance and Matthew Tran, and they make alternative pop that sets dreamy vocals against fast, rattling breakbeats. The song "endlessly" shows how well that mix works, with light pop melodies floating over busy drums. If you like PinkPantheress, you'll feel at home quickly. Their EP "autogratis" gives the guitars more to do. "Jesus in China (Overflow)" has the swagger of early 2000s pop rock, while "Driving Away" runs on drum and bass rhythms. Each member writes from their own musical tastes, and they keep letting the others add something to a song. That's how a track can open as indie pop and end up at a proper dance break a few minutes later.
