Few rock bands can claim a horn section as their signature sound, but Chicago built an entire identity around it. Formed in 1967 and originally calling themselves the Big Thing, then the Chicago Transit Authority, they blended rock, jazz, R&B, and pop in a way that felt genuinely new. Their debut double album landed them on the Billboard 200 and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. That was just the beginning: they became one of the best selling groups of all time, shifting over 100 million records worldwide. In chart terms, only the Beach Boys have outperformed them among American acts in RIAA and Billboard history. Twenty top ten singles on the Hot 100, five consecutive number one albums, and a Grammy win for "If You Leave Me Now" tell part of the story. Their debut album was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and the original lineup made it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. The band received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
