About

Scottish percussionist Colin Currie has spent his career doing something most classical musicians never attempt: making percussion genuinely exciting to audiences and composers alike. He is the go to performer for new concertos, having premiered works by Elliott Carter, Jennifer Higdon, Louis Andriessen, and Nico Muhly among many others. His recording of Higdon's Percussion Concerto won a Grammy for Best Classical Contemporary Composition in 2010, and his solo album Borrowed Time on the Onyx label shows off the full range of his abilities. Currie founded the Colin Currie Group specifically to champion the music of Steve Reich, and later added the Colin Currie Quartet for percussion quartet repertoire. In 2017 he launched his own independent label, Colin Currie Records. He holds a Visiting Professorship at the Royal Academy of Music and is Artist in Residence at London's Southbank Centre, where an entire percussion festival, Metal Wood Skin, was dedicated to him in 2014. Few soloists in any genre have done more to push composers toward writing for their instrument.
